Google has partnered with Kairos Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to deploy the US’ first utility-scale Generation IV nuclear reactor.

The Hermes 2 plant, slated for Oak Ridge, Tennessee, will deliver 50 megawatts (MW) of carbon-free electricity to Google’s facilities in Montgomery County, Tennessee and Jackson County, Alabama beginning in 2030, under a long-term power purchase agreement.

The collaboration represents the first time a US utility has signed a PPA for advanced nuclear technology. The move comes as Big Tech’s surging demand for electricity, driven by generative AI and energy-intensive cloud infrastructure, pushes national power consumption to record highs.

The Hermes 2 deployment is part of a broader initiative that could unlock up to 500 MW of advanced nuclear capacity for the US grid, according to Google and Kairos Power. The project is expected to support the needs of Google’s growing digital footprint while providing firm, carbon-free energy to the region.

Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s Global Head of Data Center Energy, said the partnership “will accelerate the deployment of innovative nuclear technologies and help support the needs of our growing digital economy while also bringing firm carbon-free energy to the electricity system.”

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright called the project “essential to US AI dominance and energy leadership,” noting the Department of Energy’s ongoing support for Kairos Power through the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program.
