New research by FasterMarkets forecasts an increase in synthetic graphite production capacity and cuts in China’s electric vehicle (EV) subsidy has lowered demand and prices for graphite.
(Graphite makes up the majority of the anode in EV lithium-ion batteries)
However, rising demand for electric batteries in the second half of 2023 means demand could begin to outstrip supply.
“Deficit conditions will worsen in 2024 with demand for graphite from the battery sector forecast to rise by a further 29%, while delays to new natural graphite projects persist, propelling prices higher through 2024”
