The British Geological Survey’s Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre has released its 2024 UK Criticality Assessment, identifying 34 raw materials as critical for the UK economy and national security, with 17 new additions to the list.
Significant updates to the list include:
- nickel, iron, germanium, aluminium and chromium join the critical list (and others)
- rare earth elements, lithium, and cobalt remain critical
- palladium drops off the list due to wider geographical distribution of supply
The EU lists 32 critical minerals and the US lists 50 critical minerals (note, they split rare earth elements individually).
“I welcome the Critical Mineral Intelligence Centre’s assessment, which shows a sustainable supply of critical minerals will be more vital than ever”
— Sarah Jones MP, Industry Minister
